Flag Football

The first SNAP sport, Flag Football was created to fill a void in Special Olympics programming. Athletes who were performing at a high level among their peers, were inspired to a new sport, and a new challenge. Play is designed to have a single peer athlete compete alongside a team made up of special needs athletes. By providing on-field instruction during play, athletes can more readily grasp a complex game. The activity utilizes experienced volunteers to develop, coach, mentor and supervise ALL players in the program. Coaches provide instruction on football fundamentals and rules. Activity is held July through September, weekly on Sundays at the College of the Canyons, Upper Field, Valencia, CA. Two tournaments are held annually. This activity provides a weekly opportunity for participants to regular exercise, improving overall health and well being. Participants have shown marked improvements in confidence and poise by mastering a difficult sport. Flags, footballs and instruction are provided.
